  • What meaning do gemstone engagement rings have?

Gemstone engagement rings are not only a beautiful way to wear colour, they each have a unique meaning. So you can choose a ring in your or your partner’s favourite colour, or opt for one that has symbolism that resonates with you.

Sapphires are one of the most-loved coloured gems for engagement rings, and symbolise loyalty and devotion; while pretty pink Morganite stands for compassion and trust.

  • What is the best stone for an engagement ring?

Your engagement ring should be a piece that you love to wear for life, so the most important consideration when choosing a gemstone is that you love it! Diamonds are the most popular stone for engagement rings because they are beautiful and timeless, and are the hardest gemstone – meaning they won’t scratch when worn on your hand day to day.

However if you want a coloured engagement ring, there are several stunning gems to choose from that are also hard enough to suit engagement rings. Rubies and sapphires are the next hardest gems following diamonds, with a rating of 9 on the Mohs scale. Morganite and aquamarine (each 7.5 - 8 on the Mohs scale), topaz and amethyst (rated 7), are also hard gems suitable for engagement rings. It’s important to note that a gemstone’s hardness refers only to how easily it can be scratched. A diamond, for instance, can only be scratched by another diamond. But a ‘softer’ gem with a lower Mohs rating could be scratched by a harder one.
