Top Tips For Planning Your Wedding Day

While planning a wedding can feel like an overwhelming exercise at times, there are some simple ways to keep yourself on track and enjoy the process. Try to remember from the get-go that your wedding is about you as a couple. While it can be easy to get swept up in all the celebrations and planning, do remember it’s about you both, there’s no ‘I’ in the team. Sit down with your fiancé and talk about your ultimate dream day. Is it a DIY affair on a private property, dancing under the stars in a clear marquee, a swanky inner-city celebration, or a low-key beach bash? Write down how you imagine your dream day and what you both would like out of it; this will help you to identify your non-negotiables - the things that you will prioritise when making planning decisions. Here are some of my insider tips for planning your wedding day.

1. Pick your priorities

Identifying your wedding day must-haves will allow you to establish where to splurge, where to save and what aspects will make the day the most authentic celebration for the two of you. Perhaps you’re a foodie who wants to offer your guests the best culinary delights, or you wish to invest in entertainment that will keep everyone dancing all night long. Alternatively, dream-like florals and a sensational ceremony might be what make your heart sing. Whatever it is, identify early in the planning process what is of most importance to you. Keep in mind everybody’s wedding day priorities will differ and knowing what yours are will help pave a clear path to planning happiness.

2. Budget business

When it comes to your wedding budget, it’s important to be realistic, everybody has a budget they need to work within. Sitting down to establish your wedding spend will help to alleviate the pressure and decision-making along the way.

My top tip for establishing a budget is to sit down with your partner, identify your income streams, factor in your outgoings (think rent, mortgages, daily expenses), and consider the balance. From there, you can each agree to what you wish to save and what you’re comfortably able to contribute to your wedding celebration. At the end of the day, you don’t have to spend big to celebrate beautifully, and planning beyond your means will only cause

headaches.

3. Planning tools

This may be your first time headed down the aisle, and you only know what you know! Take time to consider how you best operate - are you a pen-to-paper kind of person, or is a whizz-bang spreadsheet more your style? Whichever is more suitable, arm yourself with the tools to make the planning process simpler. Wedding planning books, lists and spreadsheets are your friend. Document, save, and re-save every little thing. Having shared folders that both yourself and your partner can access and work on together, as well as a safe space for notes, quotes and key wedding supplier information will help you feel in control. My hot tip here is to jot down questions for your suppliers as they arise, meaning that in your planning meetings, you can fill the missing pieces of the wedding planning puzzle as you go.

4. Trust your team

Wedding suppliers are worth their weight in gold. If you have a problem or concern, a tricky situation to tackle or need some advice - ask the professionals. Trust me, they have seen and heard it all before. For instance, when a celebrant suggests you need a Plan B ceremony location in case of inclement weather - they’re right! Or when your stylist suggests you can repurpose your florals from one area of the day to another - you (and your budget) will thank them for it. When it comes to wedding planning, no one expects you to be an expert, so take a deep breath and leave it to the professionals. At the end of the day, the client-supplier relationship needs to be one built on trust and mutual respect. You all have the same end goal.

5. Make it personal

Beyond the legalities of what’s required to get you formally married, a wedding day can look absolutely any way you want it to. If certain traditional elements aren't your style, give them the flick - they’ll only become a burden on your budget and be a reluctant addition in your wedding day timeline.

You’ll never regret doing your day in your own unique way, but to that point, it’s important to make sure the celebration isn't solely focussed on one person. Ensure you inject both of your personalities and styles into the day, you’ll feel happiest and most relaxed when you do.

6. Don’t make accessories an afterthought

So much time spent planning a wedding day can be put into the big-ticket items, and once you’ve selected details such as a dress or suit, florals and food, oftentimes the small but special aspects can be forgotten. Accessorising your look - from footwear to headpieces or the all-important wedding bands, will elevate the occasion in more ways than one. When it comes to selecting the perfect wedding band, remember to start the search early and think about factors such as whether the band you select complements your lifestyle or wardrobe choices, and whether it is important to you if it matches your engagement ring. Don’t discount the fun that comes with shopping for your wedding band, it’s a task that you can tackle together as you try the options and realise that your big day is not so far away.

At the end of it all, you get to marry your best friend, and you are so very loved. What could be better than that?

Happy Planning!
