Knowledge is Golden: Your Gold Jewellery Need-to-Knows

What is real gold jewellery?

First things first: what is real gold jewellery? It’s made with the precious, naturally-occurring metal gold.

Pure gold is 24ct, but in this state it’s too malleable for use in jewellery. That’s why gold jewellery is most often crafted from an alloy, which means the gold is blended with other metals, to increase its strength and ensure the jewellery holds its shape.

Choosing gold jewellery crafted in at least 10ct gold will ensure your pieces give you lasting shine, beauty, and durability.

What are the different shades of gold?

Gold jewellery comes in three beautiful shades: yellow, white, and rose.

Yellow gold is the colour most people think of when they think ‘gold’, because it reflects the natural colour of pure gold.

White gold is the most versatile shade when it comes to styling jewellery, and being the perfect backdrop to diamonds, it’s the most loved metal for engagement rings. White gold is made by blending pure gold with palladium, a naturally silver-white metal, and it’s usually also plated with rhodium to give it a brighter colour and lustre.

Rose gold is the most unique colour, loved for its warm blush hue. Rose gold is produced by mixing pure gold with copper, and sometimes silver to soften the colour.

Which colour of gold is the best?

The only way to decide which colour of gold is best, is to choose the one you love most! If you opt for genuine gold jewellery that is at least 10ct, then your yellow, rose, and white gold jewellery pieces contain the same amount of pure gold, making them equally precious.

White gold is popular for engagement rings, because it enhances the bright white sparkle of diamonds. Yellow gold is the most classic shade, and the most obviously ‘golden’, so these pieces will always be in style.

Rose gold is modern, but its warm shade also has a vintage edge, making it a timeless choice. It’s a beautiful and unique shade for an engagement ring, and it’s also the perfect match to pink-hued gemstones such as rhodolite garnet, pink tourmaline and morganite.

Of course, there’s also no rule to say that you can only have one shade of gold jewellery! Switch it up to suit your mood or different occasions, or mix your metals.

How do I care for my gold jewellery?

Keep your gold pieces shining by giving them a gentle polish regularly with a soft cloth, to remove everyday dust and oils. When it’s time to give your gold jewellery a deeper clean, use a small amount of mild detergent in warm water. Soak your jewellery in the solution for a few minutes, then gently rub with your fingers. Rinse and dry thoroughly and gently.

It’s best to take your jewellery off at the end of the day and store it safely in a jewellery box.
