Caring for your Watch

To extend the life of your watch it is recommended to regularly remove sweat, dust and dirt from the case, bracelet or strap with a soft dry cloth. For heavy soil, warm soapy water may be used providing the watch is water resistant and is dried properly following the cleaning process.

Avoid exposing the watch to prolonged direct sunlight or leaving it in extremely hot or cold places for extended periods of time. Extremes of temperature may damage the battery or movement.

The watch may be worn while playing sport, however severe shocks such as dropping the watch onto a hard surface may cause permanent damage. Hard surfaces can scratch the watch.

While no problems should occur during normal use around household appliances, we recommend that your watch be kept away from transformers, arc welders, magnetic blankets or other strongly magnetising items. Magnetic fields may temporarily affect the accuracy of the watch.

Do not expose your watch to high temperatures, e.g. placing it in the sun, on the dashboard of a vehicle, or in a hot tub. It can cause the watch to malfunction, shorten battery life or damage components. Extreme cold can cause stoppages or poor timekeeping.

Remember your watch is a delicate instrument and although it does have some protection against shocks and knocks, it is not indestructible. Dropping a watch onto a hard surface or knocking can damage the movement, the case, glass, or other components. If a watch is rubbed against an abrasive surface such as concrete, stone, glass, or ceramic it is likely to be scratched. Sand embedded in wooden tables, or the porcelain clay in most writing paper will also scratch or abrade the case, bracelet or glass of a watch. Do not polish your gold tone watch with jewellery or metal polish.

This should not be done if the watch has not been water tested recently. Instead, bring it in to a Michael Hill service center for cleaning. Water blasters or solvents will damage your watch. Please do not use them.

Firstly, ensure the crown is pushed all the way in, as the watch will not function when the crown is pulled out. You may need to do this when you first wear the watch. Otherwise, most often the issue will be as a result of needing a new battery. You can take your watch to your local Michael Hill store, or to any watch servicing location where there will be a small fee for battery replacement. Don’t forget to request the pressure test so it remains water tight.

Your nearest Michael Hill store can arrange for a battery replacement, fees will be applicable and may include transport charges in some cases. In some cases, after a battery replacement, your watch should be tested for water resistance (pressure test). Ask your local store if the test is needed.

Michael Hill watches are water resistant; not water proof. Please check your watch water resistance against the water-related use table above to see what water conditions your watch can withstand. The water resistance indicated (either in METRES or ATM) refers to a dry atmospheric pressure test and is not the depth below sea level that the watch has been designed for. When a watch has been in salt water, always rinse with fresh water and dry. Watches with leather bands should ideally not be worn in water as the material will deteriorate over time. If the watch is exposed to chlorinated pools, soaps, salt water, etc the gaskets should be changed on a yearly basis. If a watch has moisture under the glass, keep it dry and bring it to us as soon as possible.
