The special thing that makes diamonds so loved is their incredible sparkle. From regular build-up of dust and oils to hand sanitiser, everyday wear can dull your diamonds’ sparkle over time.
Luckily, by cleaning your diamond engagement ring regularly, you can keep it looking as beautiful as the day you received it.
At Michael Hill we offer complimentary lifetime cleaning for your jewellery – so for a professional and safe clean, we always recommend bringing your rings in-store.
If there’s a time you’re unable to get to store, or you just want to give your precious pieces some love from the comfort of home, follow our guide below to get your rings sparkling like new.
Cleaning your engagement ring - what you’ll need
Set up your diamond jewellery for a home spa session with the following items:
A small bowl
Mild dishwashing soap
Clean, soft toothbrush
Soft lint-free cloth
Jug
Cleaning your engagement ring – what to do
Fill your bowl with warm water.
Add a few drops of mild dishwashing soap (avoid any harsh chemicals such as chlorine, bleach, or other household cleaners, which could damage your ring’s metal setting).
Place your ring in the bowl and allow it to soak for 20 minutes or so. The dishwashing soap will help to break down oils which can stick to the diamond’s surface.
Gently brush your diamond with a soft toothbrush to remove any dirt and grime. Ensure the toothbrush is clean, and do not use a toothbrush that you use for anything else. Also, be sure to only brush the stone and be careful not to scrub the metal setting too much, as it may scratch.
Rinse off your ring. We recommend holding your ring over the bowl and rinsing with a jug of clean water. However, if you do rinse over a sink or basin, ensure you have the plug in place!
Gently pat your ring dry with a soft, lint-free cloth (to ensure no pieces of lint, such as from a towel, become caught on your freshly cleaned ring).
Leave in a safe place to air-dry completely before putting your ring back on.
Please note that the above guide refers to diamond rings. Extra care will need to be taken for most coloured gemstone engagement rings and vintage rings, and soaking your ring or using a brush for cleaning is not always appropriate, especially for stones with a lower hardness rating. If you have any questions about how to properly care for and clean your engagement ring and jewellery, particularly in regards to complying with your Lifetime Diamond Warranty, please speak to our expert teams in-store or book your Virtual Consultation.
