Myrna recalls an outing to the races shortly after they started dating. Hy had put a $2 bet on a horse (“a sizeable amount of money in 1963!”) and gave the ticket to her for safe-keeping.
Hy: You’re beautiful
Myrna: You’re so sweet.
Shortly after, she left for a summer trip to Europe with no promises from Hy, who thought he was in “deeper than [he] wanted to be.” But he missed her so much that they got engaged when she returned, and married soon after.
Now, 50 years later, they are still discovering the ups and downs of love: “You would imagine [being] secure in a marriage…not afraid of losing the other one but at this stage of our lives…you worry about losing your mate and ending by yourself…that’s the hard thing.”
“Sometimes the upside of love brings out lots of the downsides. It’s still worth it. It’s still worth it.”
